Why I Sat In A Room Full of Salt, And Why You Should Too

Now, some of you are probably looking at this title totally confused. Sitting in a room that’s covered in salt sounds strange at first, but let me explain. Being in a salt room is a part of something called salt therapy.

What Is It?

Salt therapy is a natural remedy known for it’s abilities to cause better breathing and sleep, along with lower stress levels and overall promote better wellness. There are people who use salt therapy to help cure sinus infections and allergies. Salt has many different properties, just to name a few: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and properties that clear out mucus. It can also help reduce inflammation of the skin and absorb impurities. Now I don’t know about you, but looking at all these different benefits of salt therapy has me like:

So I did.

I did some research and found a place in Maryland called the Salt Sanctuary that is known for their salt therapy services. There are so many other salt spas in Maryland, but I chose this one for the convenience of the location and the price.

The Salt Sanctuary of Maryland located in Elkridge, MD

How Does It Work?

The most common form of salt therapy is to sit in a room of salt so that you can relax and breathe in the salt. Most salt spas use a device called a halogenerator that releases super small salt particles into the room so that it’s easy to inhale. They offer a 45 minute session for $45. You can do it once, but if you would like to do it again, or make it a habit, then they offer session packages where you can get 6 or 10 sessions. If you want to go more often, then they have the 1 month and the 3 month packages, where you can go as many times as you want in the time specified. But for this time, I just got the 45 minute session.

My Experience

As soon as I walked in the door, I was met with a soothing smell and relaxing music. I did my session first thing in the morning, so there wasn’t anybody else there besides the staff and I. They had me hang my jacket up and put my bag in one of their lockers, after that, I was led to the back where I had to take off my shoes before entering the room. Here’s a tip, if you decide to go to a salt spa, make sure to bring socks, the floor of the room is covered in salt, and some of the particles are big and kind of hurt to walk on. I’m not sure if all spas will let you keep socks on, but this one did, because they give you plastic covers to put on your feet. Before walking in the room, they also give you a pair of comfy headphones that play calming music so that you can completely relax and be at ease.

sorry for the blurry quality

Since the temperature of the salt room is a bit cold, they offer blankets for you to use. After receiving all the items, I was finally able to step inside the room. Both the walls and the floor were completely covered in salt. There were eight chairs (all of them recline by the way, so that’s a plus, lol).

What the room looked like ^

After picking a chair, I snuggled comfortably under the blanket, put my headphones on, closed my eyes, and just let myself drift into the ultimate relaxation mode (after I played in the salt for a bit of course). One of the things that I really enjoyed about the experience is that they dim the lights, which helped me to relax even more. By the time my session was over, I totally felt rejuvenated, and I finally understood the reason why people enjoy salt therapy. I will definitely be back again, and hopefully after reading this, you guys will give salt therapy a try too! Let me know in the comments about your opinions and experiences.

Thank you Hannah. This post was perfect timing. There is a Salt Cave in my area and I actually called them earlier today to inquire about a girls day. They also offer foot detoxes, facials, massages, etc. My daughter goes regularly and loves it. Great hearing your take on it.

I’ve never heard of salt therapy. The concept of sitting in a room covered in salt certainly isn’t something I would have thought of, but it sounds so relaxing. Now I want to try it too! Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I love going to spa’s but this is special. I’ve heard of something similar but not exactly like this. I will have to check it out. I am assuming it wasn’t so cold that it kept you from relaxing? Thanks for sharing your experience. Another good reason to visit Maryland.

I’ve been in a salt cave twice (there are 2 in North Dakota)!! It’s a very peaceful environment for sure, unless you don’t have ear-phones on and your fellow cave-dwellers start to snore. Ha ha
