“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.”
– Jean Shinoda Bolen
Everybody needs a break every now and then. We all need to take some time out to focus on ourselves. After a long day at work, or a stressful day at school, or even just wanting to do something to rejuvenate and get your groove back, here are 5 things you can do to have an amazing self care day:
1. Pamper Yourself
You are an amazing person who deserves to focus on yourself every now and then. Pampering yourself is a great way to treat yourself the way you deserve. The way I pamper myself on self care days is doing face masks. There’s something about focusing on treating my skin that just makes me feel so much better. If you’re like me, you don’t do a whole, 5+ step skincare routine daily, so set aside a few days a month to dedicate yourself to treating your body right. Now, if doing face masks aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to pamper yourself, whatever makes you feel better about yourself: DO IT.

2. Do a social media detox
Let’s be honest, most of us check our phones so often it’s like we’re getting paid to do it. Social media is a wonderful thing, but too much of it can mess with our heads. Instagram is filled with people posting the best parts of their lives, the “picture perfect” part, so to speak. Looking at pictures like that can lead to people feeling sad about their own lives. And that is NOT the mentality we should have. Even if you don’t feel this way scrolling endlessly through your Instagram feed, it’s still nice to take a break from social media every now and then. Just imagine all the productive things you could get done in the same amount of time you spend on social media. You could go from this….

to this…

3. Meditate or do yoga
Piggybacking off of the second point, meditation is a great way to spend your time, and it’s way more beneficial than checking social media all day. People meditate in different ways, some do yoga, others sit in one spot and just close their eyes. It’s normal to meditate in a quiet spot, but I always prefer to listen to soothing sounds in the background. Spotify has some amazing playlists to calm and soothe your soul, just look under the Focus genre. There are also a few apps I absolutely LOVE, where you are allowed to make your own soothing music, so that way you can make sure that it sounds exactly the way you want it. If you want me to write a post about my favorite apps just leave a comment below.

4. Be creative
Art is a great stress reliever, whether it’s painting or drawing, there are so many different forms of art. One of my favorite things to do on my self care days is to color in a stress relieving coloring book, yes, you read that right. There are coloring books out there that are specifically made for adults, and they all vary in purpose, some are for anxiety, some are for stress, others are just for fun. Now, if that doesn’t sound appealing to you, there are other ways to be creative. Try making your own stress ball, or do a DIY bath bomb and take a nice, relaxing bath (making a post about this soon). Whatever is a fun, calming activity to you, whether it’s journaling, reading, drawing, or creating your own things, definitely include it on your day of self care.

5. Take a walk outside
Some of you may be thinking, “a walk? what????”

It has been scientifically proven that taking a walk improves your health, mentally, physically, and emotionally. It doesn’t even have to be a long walk, like a mile, start off slow, maybe 5-10 minutes a day, and then gradually increase the amount of time. Going on walks also saves you from spending money on a gym membership *wink wink*. I personally love going on scenic walks, sometimes I’ll go for a walk at a local park, or even just around my college campus. Once again, these are all mere suggestions, do what’s best for you, what makes you happy.

Hopefully you’re able to incorporate some, or all, of these things into your self care day. If you like to do anything else, let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear them!
